Thinking of SEIS/EIS when looking for fundraising? Think no more! The new data for 2021-2022 regarding both schemes have now been released by HMRC outlining the benefits.

EIS

Last year (2021/2022), 4,480 companies raised a total of £2,305 million of funds under the EIS scheme. Both numbers are the highest since the scheme was introduced, which outlines this scheme’s popularity.

Funding has also increased by 39% from the previous year when 3,765 companies raised £1,662 million. The investment saw a significant rebound post–pandemic to a level higher than we saw before the downturn during the height of the Covid–19 pandemic in 2020 to 2021.

Around £584 million of investment was raised by 1,755 new EIS companies from 2021 to 2022.

From 2021 to 2022, £785 million of investment (34% of all EIS investment) went to companies from the Information and Communication sector. Companies registered in London and the South East amounted to the largest proportion of investment, raising £1,489 million (65% of all EIS investment).

From 2022 to 2023, 3,650 AAR applications for EIS were received and 2,945 (81%) have been approved so far. The number of applications has increased from 2021 to 2022 when 3,575 AAR applications were received and 2,620 (73%) approved.

SEIS

In the last tax year, 2,270 companies raised a total of £205 million of funds under the SEIS scheme. Funding in 2,270 is at the highest level since the scheme was introduced and has increased by 16% from 2020 to 2021 when 2,105 companies raised £176 million.

Around 1,815 of the companies were raising funds under the SEIS scheme for the first time in 2021 to 2022, representing £179 million of investment. £83 million of that investment (40% of all SEIS investment) accounted for the Information and Communication sector. Companies registered in London and the South East accounted for the largest proportion of investment, raising £137 million (67% of SEIS investment) last year.

From 2022 to 2023, 2,825 AAR applications for SEIS were received and 2,315 (82%) have been approved so far. The number of applications has decreased from 2021 to 2022 when 2,855 AAR applications were received and 2,055 (72%) approved.
